Blue-Green Algae Active at Loughbrickland Lake 28 May 2012
Tests carried out by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency have shown that the blue-green algal bloom at Loughbrickland Lake has become active.
The Council’s Environmental Health Department has taken steps to advise the public of the risks of coming into contact with the water whilst the bloom is ongoing by posting warning notices at access points around the lake and in Loughbrickland Park where the river flows through.
The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure who has an interest in the lake in terms of the fishing provision have also been advised and they support the Council’s position in advising people not to consume fish caught from the lake whilst the bloom is present.
The Council is also working with Department of Agriculture and Rural Development who are taking steps to advise local landowners to keep livestock away from the lake.
