Blue-Green Algae Update at Loughbrickland Lake 18 June 2012
Tests carried out by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency have shown that the blue-green algal bloom at Loughbrickland Lake that was detected on 25 May 2012 appears to have dissipated. The Council’s Environmental Health Department has now removed warning notices erected at access points around the lake at Loughbrickland Park, advising the public of the risks of coming into contact with the water.
Further samples will be taken by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency next week to confirm that the bloom has now gone and the situation will be monitored should conditions for growth return.
The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) who has an interest in the lake in terms of the fishing provision has also been advised of these developments. DCAL has highlighted that agricultural pollution in the lake has contributed significantly to the occurrence of the blue-green algal bloom. It has requested that any pollution incidents, including the spreading of slurry within 20m of any watercourse, should be reported to the Water Pollution Hotline on T: 0800 80 70 60.
