‘Give it a Go!’ This Summer 11 July 2012
The groundbreaking ‘Give it a Go!’ initiative which took place earlier this year was such a success that a new programme of activities has been unveiled for July and August – ‘Give it a Go! Summer’.
During the summer, people living in the Banbridge District Council area are being offered an exciting opportunity to participate in the programme to help them get active, eat well and ultimately feel good.
Gerry Bleakney, Head of Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement with the Public Health Agency in the southern area, explained: “The Olympics may be on in London, but here at home you can try a range of activities and events which will help you to be active, eat well and feel good. Summer strolls, runs and cycles in local parks, boot camps, table tennis, supermarket tours, and information sessions are just some of the activities planned. All of these specially organised activities are available at reduced rates and are taking place in this area.”
Mairead McAlinden, Chief Executive of the Southern Trust, continued: “Also, during July and August reduced-price swimming lessons are available during public opening times. Contact your local leisure centre directly for more details. Each of these activities offers the opportunity to try out new things and could help to kickstart or continue efforts to live more healthily.’”
Council Chairman Junior McCrum added: “The first ‘Give it a Go!’ was a great success, so it is great to see a new version this summer, particularly with the Olympics acting as an extra incentive to improve our lifestyles. We are delighted to team up with the Public Health Agency, the Southern Trust and neighbouring councils for the ‘Give it a Go! Summer’ initiative.”
‘Give it a Go! Summer’ has been organised through a partnership between Public Health Agency, Southern Group Environmental Health Committee, Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Armagh City & District Council, Banbridge District Council, Craigavon Borough Council and Newry & Mourne District Council. Events are taking place throughout July and August.
