Irish Linen Tour

The very popular Irish Linen Tour is a full day escorted tour around the sites associated with the District's famous linen heritage. The tour commences with a visit to McConville’s Scutch Mill, where visitors are shown the process of scutching flax as it would have originally been done. The tour also includes a visit to Lisburn Linen Museum, which houses many interesting artefacts, including a piece of cloth from the mummy of Tutenkamen and portraits of the Barbour linen family. The tour concludes with a visit to Ferguson's Irish Linen Centre. Founded by Thomas Ferguson in the 1880s, the factory is the sole producer of double damask linen in the world. During the tour visitors are given an overview of the history of the factory and the opportunity to see the production of this luxury product from the initial design stage through to the finished product, which is then packed and sealed and ready to be dispatched throughout the world. The tour of Ferguson’s ends in the well stocked factory shop. As the Ferguson Irish Linen Centre is closed on Saturdays, the tour will consist of McConville’s Scutch Mill and Lisburn Linen Museum. Half day tours are available combining two venues. Group quotations are available on request by contacting the Tourist Information Centre on 028 4062 3322.
