Real Nappy Week is a national campaign run in June every year to promote the benefits of using real nappies and to increase awareness about how much better real nappies are for the planet, your baby's bottom and your purse.
Benefits of Using Real Nappies
- Real nappies are cheaper and don't cost the earth. The Banbridge District produces 1,200 tonnes (equivalent to 5% of all domestic waste) of disposable nappy waste each year and it costs £50,000 to send this to landfill
- Every disposable nappy thrown away can take up to 500 years to decompose
- Real nappies are much cheaper than disposable nappies
Tips for Using Real Nappies
- Consider using a real nappy laundering service from providers such as Blooming Bottoms for a small weekly fee
- If you wash your child's nappies at home, you should use an energy efficient washing machine
- Wash soiled nappies at 60 degrees
- Wash wet nappies and waterproof wraps at lower temperatures along with the rest of your laundry
- Avoid tumble drying and hang nappies out to dry or use an airer
- Avoid using unnecessary chemicals such as conditioners
- Never iron nappies or wraps
- Extend the life of your nappies by reusing them on another baby or give/sell them to someone else
- Use washable liners
