The Environmental Health Department operates a comprehensive dog control service to members of the public living within the District. A range of legislation is in place to help protect members of the public and livestock from attacks, to promote responsible ownership by encouraging dog owners to ensure dogs are kept on their own property and to prevent straying helping to reduce the problem of dog fouling.

Dog Fouling
Dog fouling is an extremely sensitive issue. The vast majority of complaints received relate to dog fouling. The dog control service aims to provide a clean and pleasant environment for all members of the community to enjoy. Patrols of areas are carried out in the District on a regular basis by the dog warden particularly where fouling is prevalent. Dog foul bins have been provided for dog owners and 'No Fouling' signs have been erected. 

Dog Rehoming
On a monthly basis approximately 15 dogs are temporarily homed at the kennels with a view to rehoming.  Not all dogs are suitable for rehoming but every effort is made to find them a home where they will be cared for.  A local newspaper assists the dog control service in rehoming dogs and has proved to be a successful initiative. Educational Programmes
Educational programmes are provided by the department to local school children throughout the district.  From its commencement in September 2003 a significant number of schools have been visited. The aims of the scheme are to provide children with useful information concerning responsible dog ownership.  Some of the topics covered include the following:

Dog Licences
In general everybody who owns a dog must have a dog licence.  If you live within Banbridge District Council area you may obtain a license form from the Environmental Health Department.

Basic Licence    £12.50

Over 65 Free (for 1 dog) Additional dogs £5 each

Block Licence   £32

A block licence is available for anyone with 3 or more unsterilised bitches used for breeding or 3 or more dogs registered with the kennel club.

A reminder is sent out every year for your dog licence. It is an offence to keep a dog without a licence and a fixed penalty notice of £75.00 may be issued to anyone not in possession of a current licence. Non payment of fixed penalties may result in a fine of up to £1000.00.
