Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about refuse collection:
Q1. My black wheelie bin has a broken wheel. Can the Council provide me with a new bin?
A1. Yes. You can purchase a new bin from the Council for £22 which includes delivery. However, you can also purchase spare parts for your bin such as a wheel (£5 each), lid (£10 each) or axle (£5 each). A new black bin comes with a 5-year guarantee replacement.
Q2. My black bin was not emptied last week. Who can I contact within the Council to assist me?
A2. You can contact the Council's Technical Services Department on 028 4066 0604 for all types of refuse collection enquiries. If your black bin has been mistakenly missed, the Council bin lorry will attempt to empty your bin within 24 hours.
Q3. My black bin is full and I have several extra black bags of waste. Will the refuse collection vehicle accept extra black bags along with my bin?
A3. No. The refuse collection vehicle will only empty your black bin. Excess waste must be taken along to your nearest Community Recycling Centre.
Q4. My mother has just had an operation and cannot bring her bin to the front of the house? Can she get assistance?
A4. Yes. If you require assistance with getting a bin to the kerbside because of health, age and/or disability, you can request this service free of charge from the Council's Technical Services Department. To request this service, simply write a letter to the Department explaining the reason why you require assistance. In assessing your request you may receive a visit from a Council officer.
Q5. I have just moved to the District. How can I find out about refuse collection and recycling services?
A5. You can contact the Council's Technical Services Department on 028 4066 0604 to find out about local refuse collection and recycling services. You can also request a copy of the Council's collection calendar and recycle guide which contains all key information about these services along with facilities. This website provides comprehenisve information about refuse collection/recycling services and facilities.
Q6. I have a septic tank. Can the Council empty this?
A6. No this service is provided by the Water Service. You can contact NI Water Service on 08457 440088.
Q7. Can I hire a skip from the Council?
A7. No, the Council no longer provides skips for hire. This service can be provided by a private firm.
Q8. Someone has illegally dumped some rubbish on the side of the road close to where I live. Who should I contact?
A8. Illegal dumping is the responsibility of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. You should report such cases to this Service on 028 9054 6720. In some instances, the Council will remove rubbish if it is a threat to public health.
Q9. How much does it cost to have a bulky waste item collected by the Council?
A9. A bulky waste collection costs £12 for six household items only and £40 per load for a business. Payment must be made in advance of the collection.
